> Quick answer: No patents explicitly detail proprietary methods for cold-weather battery insulation or thermal management in outdoor solar lighting systems [2][5][7][10][15][21]. Only a snow-melting mechanism for solar panels indirectly supports winter charging [21].
In the quest to optimize solar lamps for harsh cold-weather conditions, many researchers and manufacturers have sought innovative solutions. However, despite extensive research, few patents offer concrete proprietary methods for managing batteries in freezing temperatures [5][15]. This article delves into these findings and explores what is currently available.
Rechargeable Batteries as Standard
Rechargeable batteries are ubiquitous in solar lighting devices, serving as the primary power storage systems. Patents like US8299717B2 describe an outdoor LED system with a storage battery [2], while patents such as US20120020060A1 reference solar-powered lighting systems with batteries for storing energy [5]. Similarly, WO2010057138A2 and US10563827B2 both detail rechargeable battery systems [10][15]. These patents highlight the standard use of rechargeable batteries but do not specify how they are protected from cold temperatures.
Environmental Durability in General Terms
Several patents mention environmental durability or weather resistance, but these descriptions are generic and do not address specific insulation techniques. US9200767B2 describes an adjustable solar-charged lamp with a housing that protects internal components [8], while US4841416A refers to a solar charging lamp with a protective housing [12]. Yet, these descriptions do not delve into cold-weather insulation or battery thermal management.
Snow Melting Mechanisms
CN219351666U describes a solar power generation panel with a snow melting function that uses a pump to inject hot water and snow-melting agents through tubes to clear the snow [21]. While this mechanism does not directly address battery insulation, it ensures uninterrupted solar energy collection during heavy snowfall, indirectly supporting battery charging in winter conditions.
Battery Placement and Housing
WO2014036356A2 discusses a retrofit pole system that includes batteries housed within the pole structure or in protected enclosures [25]. This implies some level of environmental protection but does not specify insulation materials, thermal management systems, or cold-weather charging algorithms.
Absence of Proprietary Thermal Management
Notably absent from the patents reviewed are any claims related to battery temperature sensors, thermal insulation materials (e.g., foam, phase-change materials), battery heaters, or low-temperature charging protocols. This gap is significant given that lithium-ion batteries suffer from reduced capacity and increased internal resistance in cold temperatures [7].
Key Takeaways
- Rechargeable batteries are standard in solar lighting systems.
- No patents disclose proprietary methods for cold-weather battery insulation or thermal management.
- A snow-melting mechanism for solar panels indirectly supports winter charging by clearing the snow.

One of the most cost effective solar applications is a solar powered pump, as it is far cheaper to purchase a solar panel than it is to run power lines.[11][12][13] They often meet a need for water beyond the reach of power lines, taking the place of a windmill or windpump. One common application is the filling of livestock watering tanks, so that grazing cattle may drink. Another is the refilling of drinking water storage tanks on remote or self-sufficient homes. The solar array of such off-grid PV system charges a rechargeable battery, which powers a fluorescent or LED lamp during the night. Solar street lights are stand-alone power systems, and have the advantage of savings on trenching, landscaping, and maintenance costs, as well as on the electric bills, despite their higher initial cost compared to conventional street lighting. They are designed with sufficiently large batteries to ensure operation for at least a week and even in the worst situation, they are expected to dim only slightly.[citation needed] Developing countries where many villages are often more than five kilometres away from grid power are increasingly using photovoltaics. The solar panel is fixedly connected to the top of the supporting leg; electric slipways are installed on two sides of the top of the solar panel, and snow melting mechanisms are connected to the outer side walls of the electric slipways in a sliding mode. After the snow melting device is in heavy snow weather, firstly, the pump body is started to enable solution in the snow melting box to be injected into the snow melting rod through the infusion tube, then the snow melting holes are sprayed on snow covered by the light receiving surface of the solar panel, so that snow is melted by snow melting agent and hot water in the solution, and meanwhile, the electric sliding table is started to enable the snow melting rod to slide downwards, at the mome
claimed subject matter, nor to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter. [0004] The present invention relates to solar lighting, utility and power related solutions and methods for efficiently retrofitting existing street/parking light systems and other utility poles. More specifically, the system and method of the present invention are directed to utilizing the existing foundations of older light poles and replacing them with new solar powered poles that are self-raising and are fully self-contained, including batteries used for storing power. The present invention addresses ease of installation, the high costs associated with replacements or upgrades, while solving the primary issues related to the housing of the batteries required for this type of system. DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS [0005] FIGS. 1A-1D show exemplary universal foundation attachment designs. [0006] FIGS. 2A-2B illustrate a side view (2A) and top view (2B) of a pole prior to being erected. [0007] FIGS. 3A-3D illustrate a pole being raised using a hydraulic arm. [0008] FIGS. 4A-4C illustrate solar lights with the solar panels at different heights along a pole as well as different number of lights on the pole. [0009] FIG. 5 illustrates various options for the locations for the battery. [0010] FIGS. 6A-6B illustrate a fully erected utility pole, with the removal of installation flanges and the placement of the interior access panels. [0011] FIG. 7 illustrates the operational system of the present invention
